Prof Dato’ Dr Sharifah Hapsah Bte Syed Hasan Shahabudin

Chairperson & CEO, National Accreditation Board (LAN)

Dr. Sharifah Hapsah is the Chairperson & CEO, National Accreditation Board (LAN). She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery M.B.B.S. (Mal) in 1973; Master of Health Personnel Education M.H.P.Ed (NSW) in 1982; Doctorate in Medicine M.D. in 1997, Fellow of the Academy of Medicine FAMM in 1999 and Fellow of the Academy of Science in 2006. In 1980, she was selected for a Master in Health Personnel Education (MHPEd) course at the WHO Regional Training Center for Health Development at the University of New South Wales. Upon graduation in 1981, she was appointed the head of the Medical Education Unit.

She has been appointed numerous times as short term advisor, consultant, rapporteur of meetings, speaker at conferences and member of expert groups to WHO, UNDP, UN Office for the Advancement of Women, ILO, Commonwealth of Learning (COL), OECD and various universities in areas such as medical education and health workforce planning and training, higher education, quality assurance, HIV/AIDS, gender, ICT, and distance education.

Dr. Sharifah has conducted research and published extensively in Exercise Physiology and medical education since 1976. Her current research is focussed on policy issues in higher education, strategic planning, quality in higher education, and higher education management. Activities are focussed on the development of benchmarks for quality assessment and enhancement and the impact of globalisation on higher education.

Her works include articles in journals and books on medical education published internationally. The books include Transcending the Gender Information Divide, published by UNDP, 2000; Co-editor with Saran Kaur Gill, Asian Women Leaders in Higher Education – Management Challenges for the New Millennium, published by UNESCO, 2000; “Women’s Health”, a chapter in Women and Development in Malaysia - Implications for Planning and Population Dynamics, Jamilah Ariffin (ed.), University of Malaya Press 1990; “Medical Education in Malaysia”, chapter in International Handbook of Medical Education, A Sajid (ed.) and published by Greenwood Pub. Group 1993; “Medical Education in Malaysia 1905-1995” in Collection of Writings by Professors in the Medical Faculty, UKM, published in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary of the founding of UKM, 1995. ++
